The most common of cards is the most important of cards--land. Without mana your Magic deck does nothing, and without land you have no mana. Even decks that get mana from artifacts kick-start and supplement their mana production with land.

The big question when building every deck is, "How much land should I include?" Forty percent land is the starting point for a two-color deck. Experimentation will help you determine the proper balance. For example, artifact mana and "weenie" strategies can let you decrease your need for land; using spells with an in the casting cost and playing with more than two colors tend to increase your need for land.
